Description

Original pencil drawing study of Jean Valjean from Les Miserables by Edward Hopper circa 1908.
Hopper signed and dated the drawing and added the words, “Jean – Les Miserables”
Hopper moved to Paris in 1906.  While he was there, he worked on
Illustrations for
Victor Hugo’s book,
Les Miserables
.
The drawing was originally owned by the french collector, Madame J. Gambart de Lignieres.  It was later sold in auction in Los Angeles in 1938.
The pictures don’t do the artwork justice.  Any imperfections are the result of the camera reflection.
